He has the idea to use semi-conducting material such as silicon to conduct electricity and replace vacuum tubes.

He hires Walter Brattain and to help him create the first transistor

He hires John Bardeen to help to assist him and Brattain
1947:
The first transistor is created by Walter Brattain and John Bardeen
1948:
Shockley comes up with the idea for an improved version of the transistor
1948:
He announces his findings to a room of Bell Labs scientists
1948:
He leaves Bell Labs to start Shockley Semi-conductor
1957:
The Traitorous Eight leave Shockley Semi-conductor to start Fairchild Semi-conductor
August 12, 1989:
William Shockley dies at age 79
